Gamers get your controllers ready for the 15th year of Fragapalooza when it comes to the City of Leduc’s Recreation Centre (LRC) starting August 4.
The four-day gaming competition, coined as Canada’s largest and longest running computer gaming event, allows fans of computer games and other electronic games to compete in tournaments, but to also share files and bond with fellow gamers.
“It’s more of a casual atmosphere than a competitive one,” said Andrew Weidlich, who has been the tournament director for the event for the past 13 years.
The event is split into two, with the first part called a ‘land party,’ a place where gamers can “bring their computers, share files and talk,” said Weidlich. The second portion of the event is the StarCraft 2 and Team Fortress 2 tournament, which organizers say is ‘more structured’ and draws people in from as far as California and Colorado to the competition.
“It is very popular. It is the most watched event,” said Weidlich.
The StarCraft event is a round robin competition, and also features a team section where two gamers can pair up for the StarCraft event.
More than 200 people have already registered for the occasion and organizers expect at least 100 more people to register for the gaming experience in the next two weeks.
The event runs from Aug. 4-7 at the LRC and registration for the weekend tourney can be done online at www.fragapalooza.com.
